Unilever to 'sustainably source' all paper and board by 2020

Unilever is aiming for all of its paper and board packaging to be made from recycled material or sustainably managed forests by 2020. The FMCG giant said that, at the moment, 62% of its paper and board was "sustainably sourced" meaning it comes from certified forests or recycled material. Unilever is aiming for 75% to be sustainably sourced by 2015, rising to 100% by 2020.

Chief procurement officer Marc Engel said: "We are committed to working in partnership with all of our suppliers to progressively increase the proportion of paper and board packaging, or sustainably managed forests, in order to achieve this ambitious target."

Unilever said that "preference would be given to supplies delivered through the Forest Stewardship Council certification", but it would also accept other forest management certification schemes.

Engel said: "We buy considerable quantities of paper and board for packaging to ensure our goods are promoted and transported safely.

"As such it is important that we promote sustainable forestry practices and help combat deforestation and climate change through sustainable sourcing."
